WHEREAS, in a desire to acknowledge and commend exceptional Alabamians, it is with great pleasure that Dr. Joan A. Goree is recognized for her outstanding achievements as a music teacher; and

WHEREAS, after 30 years of dedicated service, Dr. Goree retired as a music theory and voice instructor for Calhoun Community College, but continues to be active musically; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Goree has been awarded the inaugural Carlton W. Kelley Teaching Excellence Award, has received national recognition by being awarded the NISOD Teaching Excellence Award, and has been listed in Who's Who Among America's Teachers; and

WHEREAS, she has presented workshops in basic musicianship and voice to various groups in and outside of Alabama, has presented specially designed music workshops for churches in the State of Alabama through the Alabama Baptist Music Department Cooperative Program, and taught for five years at the University of North Alabama and Birmingham Town and Gown Theatre Summerfest Workshops; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Goree has performed for former Vice President Al Gore and former President Jimmy Carter, and has appeared in numerous productions including Pub on the Pier, Show Boat, Guys and Dolls, Barbary Coast, Li'l Abner, Music Man, Annie, and Pajama Game; and

WHEREAS, she earned associate degrees in music, business, and secretarial sciences from Calhoun Community College; a bachelor's degree in music from Athens State University; a master's degree in music and vocal performance from the University of North Alabama; and a doctorate in music from Covington Theological Seminary; and

WHEREAS, the contributions made by Dr. Joan A. Goree to Calhoun Community College and the field of music education are invaluable, and as a result of her dedication, she has succeeded in compiling an impressive record of professional achievements that has earned for her the admiration and respect of those persons who have had the privilege of associating with her; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That Dr. Joan A. Goree is most highly commended for her outstanding professional contributions, and it is directed that she receive a copy of this resolution with sincere best wishes for continuing success.



The Joan A. Goree scholarship was established by Dr. Frances Moss in honor of Dr. Goree, retired Calhoun voice instructor. The Fine Arts Division chair awards this scholarship to a deserving student majoring in Fine Arts.
