Quin Ivy

Lived in Sheffield, AL

Ivy established Norala Recording Corporation in Sheffield in 1965.  He had been a disk jockey with WLAY since 1961 and was writing songs with Rick Hall.  Teaming with Marlin Greene, a multi-talented musician, producer, songwriter, engineer, Ivy signed Percy Sledge and recorded the classic R&B ballad "When A Man Loves A Woman".  In 1968, he built a facility on Broadway in Sheffield and renamed it Quinvy Recording Studio. He continued working with Sledge, recording a number of other hits including "Warm And Tender Love", "Cover Me", "Out Of Left Field", and many others.  Ivy began two record labels, Quinvy and South Camp, releasing material on artists such as June Edwards, Tony Borders and Bill Brandon, many of which are considered collectors items today.

Quin Ivy

Quin Ivy (born 1937) is a former disc jockey turned songwriter crucial to the Muscle Shoals scene in the 1960s.


He was the son of a farmer who later moved to Oxford where he worked as a grocer.[clarification needed] He was a DJ at WMPS in Memphis, WKDA in Nashville and WLAY in Muscle Shoals. He wrote songs with producer Rick Hall of Fame Recording Studios. Their output includes the singles "I'm Qualified" and "Lollipops, Lace and Lipstick" both recorded by Jimmy Hughes.

In 1965, Ivy opened his Quinvy recording studio. There he produced the Percy Sledge single When a Man Loves a Woman. It went to number one on the Billboard charts. He set up the Quinvy (independently distributed) and South Camp labels (distributed by Atlantic Records) before leaving the music business in the 1970s to gain an MBA degree from The University of Mississippi . He then taught accounting at the University of North Alabama until his retirement.
