Sherrill Nielsen

It was no secret that EP loved the voice of Sherrill Nielsen. During a Las Vegas show, Elvis introduced him as “the greatest tenor in gospel music.” In Elvis’ final years, Sherrill became an integral part of his music both on stage and in the recording studio. To name a few, you can hear Sherrill singing harmony with Elvis on “Blue Spanish Eyes,” “Help Me” and the high falsetto ending on “Unchained Melody.” Sherrill is well known to fans for singing “O Solo Mio” as an intro to “It’s Now Or Never” during Elvis concerts, and for the unusual “Softly, As I Leave You,” where Sherrill sings and Elvis recites the words. This duet with Elvis was ranked six in the nation and nominated for a Grammy®.

Sherrill Nielsen passed away at 11:06AM on December 10, 2010. However, during his life Sherrill sang with some of the most outstanding groups in the history of Gospel Music, such as The Statesmen, The Singing Speers and the original Imperials. Sherrill also received Grammy awards and is in several Hall of Fames.

Summarizing the talent of Sherrill Nielsen is an analogy for “The Impossible Dream.” His commitment to excellence and his love and appreciation for an audience had to be experienced to be fully understood. Perhaps Elvis said it best, when on the back of Sherrill’s first paycheck he wrote, “God loves you, but He loves you best when you sing.”
