Born: November 11, 1971

Mr. Porter completed his Bachelors Degree from the University of Alabama in Composition/Arranging and Jazz Studies. He received a Masters in Music Education from Troy State University and is currently working to become Dr. Porter at Boston University.

Mr. Porter has been a professional performer on trumpet and piano since before graduating high school. He stepped on stage with one of Motown’s most famous groups, The Four Tops, in April of 1990, one month before crossing the high school graduation stage. He has become one of the top call trumpet players in the United States since that day.

In 1991, Shane moved to Jacksonville, Florida where he became the assistant music minister and staff arranger for one of Jacksonville’s largest churches, New Life Christian Fellowship. In 1993, He returned to his hometown of Tuscaloosa to pursue his Compositions and Jazz Studies degree at the University of Alabama while also becoming the one of the main touring trumpet players for the Temptations. In 1999, at age 27, Shane was the youngest musician to be inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame list of Music Achievers. In 2009, Shane (along with the Tuscaloosa Horns) received the “Druid City Arts Award” for Musicians of the Year!

His performance experience has literally taken him all over the world and allowed him to be on stage with internationally known artists from jazz to rock-n-roll. He has performed with legends of the jazz world such as “Doc” Severinsen, “Dizzy” Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval , The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Lou Soloff (from Blood, Sweat and Tears), Wycliffe Gordon & Wynton Marsalis of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. His touring with the Temptations and The Four Tops opened the door to Shane’s performing with other groups/musicians such as the Supremes, The Marvalettes, The Spinners and Little Anthony & The Imperials. Shane performed as lead trumpet on Stevie Wonder’s final tour in 1997 �” the Natural Wonders Tour. He has been on stage to perform with other artists such as Jennifer Holliday (from the Broadway smash Dream Girls), Kenny Rogers, Franki Valli, Wayne Newton and Greg Allman. Shane has performed at New York’s “Radio City Music Hall” twice as well as at Los Angeles’s “Greek Theatre.” He has also performed with such orchestras as The Columbus Symphony (Columbus, Ohio), The Alabama Symphony, The Knoxville Symphony, The Phoenix Symphony, The Chattanooga Symphony, and the Nashville Jazz Orchestra . Shane (as a member of the Tuscaloosa Horns) is still touring with the Temptations, The Four Tops, and The O’Jays regularly. Shane has written music for and performed with two American Idol Winners, Ruben Studdard and Taylor Hicks. Not only has he performed with such artists but has also played for every president since 1990 (until President Obama) as well as clothing designers Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren and sports giants Evander Holyfield and Hank Aaron.

When his tour schedule calmed down, in 2005, he finally decided to take on his own project and founded “The New South Jazz Orchestra” (www.nsjo.com �” www.cdbaby.com/nsjo). A big band made of the Southeast region’s most dominant jazz performers and educators. Shane was the producer of this project, as well as the composer and arranger for practically all of the music on the CD which has become internationally recognized. Shane began his teaching career in 1999 at Troy State University where he took over instructing the jazz band. He also became part of the staff of arrangers for the Troy State “Sound of the South” marching band. In 2005, he accepted a position at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga as the Assistant Director of Bands and Director of the Jazz Studies Program. Shane’s jazz ensembles and marching bands have been invited to be exhibition groups for many jazz and marching festivals. During his time at UTC, he composed “Suite for the Scenic City,” arranged an entire orchestral program in which he was the featured performer. He also composed and world premiered an hour long Jazz Symphony titled “Tell Me A Story.”

Mr. Porter’s publishing career started in 1999 when he began writing for Warner Brothers Music. In less than ten years, Shane has had thirty different publications from educational music to collegiate textbooks. In 2006, he co-authored “Music Through Time, An Appreciation of Music in America and Europe” a textbook published by Kendall-Hunt. He has also written educational articles for the Canadian Band Journal and Phi Kappa Phi Forum magazine.

Shane has written music for marching bands, jazz bands, concert bands, and choirs throughout the country. He is the staff arranger for Auburn University’s Marching Band. He has also written music for The University of South Carolina, Troy State University, The University of Alabama, Clemson University, and The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Shane’s music has been featured on ESPN prominently on two separate occasions and can be heard during practically any collegiate football game broadcast on any network during football season.

His performance career has put him on the stage with some of the world's most famous artists including Stevie Wonder, Kenny Rogers, The Temptations, The O'Jays, and most recently, American Idol, Ruben Studdard. Mr. Porter is continuously promoting music education by being involved with such organizations as the National Education Association, International Association of Jazz Educators, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society & Phi Mu Alpha Sinphonia National Music Fraternity.
