...Someone with a more analytic mind is bound to ask why we are celebrating, for what has Mobile done with its 300 years? We may in turn reply that we are the home of Mardi Gras, the ‘Mother of Mystics’, or pont to the Jubilees when the sea creatures offer themselves up to residents of the Eastern Shore without anyone bothering with hooks or traps. We can list our famous sons and daughters, such as Octavia LeVert, Raphael Semmes, (both adopted Mobilians) Augusta Evans Wilson, Hank Aaron, Yolanda Betbeeze, Satchel Paige, Don Siegelman (well, he IS our first governor) and a host of others who have made important or entertaining contributions to American history and culture. We have many beautiful buildings (perhaps not as many as we once had, but we have learned our lesson), we have lovely neighborhoods, and a sense of place in a world that is increasingly homogenized. Mobilians are loyal to their community, so loyal that they will stay here even when better jobs beacon elsewhere. People born here are proud of the title ‘Native’ Mobilians...often fiercely so...why?...
