Internet Radio

The Mountain

Birmingham's newest "radio" station launched at noon today -- without the radio.

"The Mountain: Birmingham's World Class Rock" is an internet streaming music station that has positioned itself as a successor to the defunct Live 100.5, which went off the air in February.  It will be home to Scott Register's long-running Reg's Coffee House program, which hasn't been heard since Live 100.5 went silent.

The Mountain's Facebook page promises "a world class rock/adult album alternative format" with a "focus on local content through local DJ’s, specialty shows, promotions, and through highlighting local and regional bands."

The station kicked off today, quite aptly, with Jane's Addcition's "Mountain Song."  Next up was Muse's "Uprising," echoing the final song played (by a live DJ, at least) on Live 100.5.

From Birmingham Weekly:

Mountain Radio is, at its core, three gentleman: Geno Pearson, Jeff Clanton and Jeremy Harper...

"We talked about it before Live 100.5 even came on the air," says Clanton, "but when they came on we wanted to support that. Then [they] went off the air and we sat and waited and waited. We thought somebody else would come up with the idea, but then we said 'Let's just do this.' We felt like there was a hole in Birmingham for good indie rock and alternative music."

From Birmingham Mommy:

Like us, You might be wondering about their decision to go with an internet based format rather than going back on air with a typical radio station. Pearson explains:  "The growth of internet radio over the past 2 years have been tremendous. It is also easier money wise to broadcast on the internet rather than terrestrial radio."

Here's a look at the first dozen songs played by Birmingham's The Mountain Radio...

Jane's Addiction - Mountain Song
Muse - Uprising
R.E.M. - I'm Gonna DJ
INXS - Kiss the Dirt (Falling Down the Mountain)
Mumford & Sons - The Cave
Band of Horses - Laredo
Silversun Pickups - Substitution
Pete Yorn - Life on a Chain
Remy Zero - 'Til the End
NEEDTOBREATHE - Something Beautiful
Sara Bareilles - King of Anything
MuteMath - Typical
