Muscle Shoals

Wishbone Studios has served the music and recording industry since 1976. The early years played host to hits recorded by Hank Williams Jr., The Commodores, Roy Orbison, Waylon Jennings, Charlie Daniels, Thelma Houston, The Temptations, The Supremes and many others. Billboard's 1978 Song of the Year, "Angel In Your Arms" was recorded at Wishbone. Today the legacy continues under the direction of Bud and Mike McGuire.

Not only is the studio a world class, state of the art facility, but also serves as home base for country music supergroup Shenandoah and the nationally recognized music imaging company McGuire Productions. Wishbone is now ushering in a new era of the Muscle Shoals legacy of sound, recording southern gospel, praise and worship music, as well as songwriter demo's and other publishing/artist projects.

East Avalon Recorders

In 1977, Wishbone engineer Steve Moore purchased the studio from it's builder and designer Joe Wilson and East Avalon Recorders was born in the "Hit Recording Capitol of the World", Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The successful studio operated until around 1988.

Artists including the Forrester Sisters, Narvel Felts, Alan Jackson, B.J. Thomas, The Kendall's, Mac McAnnaly, George Jones, LeBlanc-Carr, Hank Williams Jr., Johnny Paycheck, Clarence Carter, Mink Deville, Hot, Will McFarlane and others recorded in the studio over the years. Legend has it that much of the work done in the studio was subbed from other area studio's therefore there are no credits on that work. If you know any history please let us know.

The studio was purchased by Blackland founder Mark Pyle in 2001 and the improvements to the building and the equipment has never stopped. The studio offers a unique blend of old school design and state-of -the art recording equipment. Marty Lewis is the chief engineer with Billy Lawson being general manager and studio master.

The studio is now accepting clients for professional recording services.......

The Muscle Shoals Sound Studio was formed in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, in 1969 when musicians Barry Beckett (keyboards), Roger Hawkins (drums), Jimmy Johnson (guitar) and David Hood (bass) (called The Swampers) left FAME Studios to create their own studio. The Muscle Shoals Sound Rhythm Section, as they became known, was the first rhythm section to own its own studio and, eventually, its own publishing and production companies. The distinctive accompaniment and arrangements have been heard on a tremendous number of legendary recordings, including those from Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, and the Staple Singers amongst others.

The original rhythm section that broke away to create these studios first formed in 1967 and initially played sessions in New York and Nashville as well as on the famous FAME recordings. The initial successes led to the arrival of more mainstream rock and pop performers among them The Rolling Stones, Traffic, Boz Scaggs, Willie Nelson, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Dr. Hook, Elkie Brooks, and Millie Jackson.

Muscle Shoals Sound Studios is located at 3614 Jackson Highway and is Listed on The National Register of Historic Places.[1] Muscle Shoals Sound Studios is a Registered Trademark of Noel Webster U.S.P.T.O. Reg.NO. 3,391,981

Under the direction of producer Rick Hall, the hits are the proof of "The Board's" sweet, warm sound. A couple examples: Aretha Franklin's dynamic voice turned to gold as "The Board" produced two of her best selling hits, "I Never Loved A Man" and "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man."
Then came James and Bobby Purify with "I'm Your Puppet." Joe Tex followed with the popular hit, "Hold what You've Got." Clarence Carter was not far behind in the goldrush, recording such hits as "Slip Away", Too Weak To Fight" and his biggest seller "Patches" which was a #1 pop and R&B record. Wicked Wilson Pickett joined in the success and became an international star with a powerful voice and Hall's timely production qualities on "Mustang Sally", "Hey Jude" , "Funky Broadway", "Hey Joe" and "The Land of 1000 Dances." This classic version of " The Land of 1000 Dances" was included on the Forrest Gump soundtrack.
A vintage Muscle Shoals song that was recently used in a movie soundtrack was "When A Man Loves A Woman." This song was in the movie Platoon and also the movie entitled When A Man Loves A Woman.
The president of MGM Records approached Rick Hall as the 1970s began, to produce a teenage group, The Osmonds. He accepted the offer and produced two consecutive number one pop singles; "One Bad Apple" which sold over five million singles, and "Yo Yo" for The Osmonds. Two albums, "The Osmonds" and "Homemade", also earned gold status. And in one year"The Board's" productions on The Osmonds were responsible for the sale of 11 million records. The year's work earned. Hall and his famous recording board the honor of being selected Billboard's Producer of the Year for the world in 1971.
The Osmond name would continue to be associated with FAME, as Hall produced two gold albums for Donny Osmond - "To You With Love, Donny" and "The Donny Osmond Album'. Hit singles for the young Osmond included "Sweet And Innocent", "Go Away Little Girl", (both #1 pop) and "Hey Girl/I Knew You When".
Paul Anka, searching for his first hit in almost ten years, turned to Rick Hall. Together, using "The Board" they recorded the gold album "Anka" which included the immensely popular "You're Having My Baby" which also went to #1 in the pop charts and sold over 3 million records. Arriving next was Mac Davis, with whom Hall had who proceeded to record 4 gold albums at FAME, including "Texas In My Rear View Mirror" and "Hooked On Music" hit in both the country and pop circles.

Castanet Records Inc.

Castanet Records was started in 1975 with its first recording by its founder Theodore Arthur Jr. "But on the other hand" which was a cover tune by Ray Charles. Our next session was "Mobile Rock" a disco jazz tune with "I Want to Love You" on the flip side. Then in 1979, the biggest record Castanet Records ever had was "Love's Traffic" featuring Ray Crumley, Theodore Arthur Jr. and Merging Traffic. This record has become a collector's item all over the world today. We are expecting the reissue to revitalize the record label. We have received calls from as far away as Japan, Stockholm, Sweden, and the UK. A few years back it was voted the best funk record in Northern Europe. We are very excited about the new reissue and would like to make it available to our friends on the web first. We are a small record label with the hitting powers of the majors.

Broadway Sound Studio, Owner: David Johnson

One of several recording studios in the Muscle Shoals area that sprang up during the 1970s. In 1973, David Johnson bought Quin Ivy's interest in Quinvy Recording Studio and changed the name to Broadway Sound Studio.

Among the acts recorded by outside producers were The Supremes, The Commodores, Swamp Dogg, among others, while Johnson's productions included Clarence Carter, Kenny Price, Percy Sledge and others.

Many studio musicians got their start in Muscle Shoals by playing first at Broadway.

The studio closed near the end of the 1980s when David Johnson assumed the duties of Executive Director of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.

Quinvy Studio

Producer Quin Ivy's biggest success was Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman," although Ivy is revered among Northern soul fans for the output of his Quinvy and South Camp labels.

Born in Oxford, MS, in 1938, the son of a white sharecropper, Ivy grew up on country music. His interest in R&B was fueled by the music of Ivory Joe Hunter and LaVern Baker and the WLAC-AM Nashville DJs, John R and Hoss Allen.

After starting a radio DJ career in his native Oxford, Ivy moved on to WMPS in Memphis, TN, and WLAY in Muscle Shoals, AL, before settling in Sheffield, AL. Opening a record store called Tune Town, Ivy began writing songs with producer Rick Hall of Fame Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals. Singer Jimmy Hughes recorded the duo's "I'm Qualified" and "Lollipops, Lace and Lipstick" was the flip side of Hughes' "Steal Away," number 17 R&B, summer 1964, the debut release of Hall's Fame label. In 1965, Ivy opened his Quinvy recording studio across the street from Tune Town, hiring guitarist/engineer Marlin Greene and giving him a percentage of the business. Wanting to expand into record production, Ivy approached weekend singer Percy Sledge about auditioning. He liked one song Sledge's band members Andrew Wright and Calvin Lewis had written but wanted a rewrite.

The revised song now titled "When a Man Loves a Woman" was recorded at Ivy's studio in late 1965 using some of the musicians who had played on hits produced by Hall: drummer Roger Hawkins, organist Spooner Oldham, bassist Junior Lowe, and Ivy's co-producer/guitarist Marlin Greene. Through Rick Hall, Ivy sent a the tape to Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records.

In spring 1966, "When a Man Loves a Woman" became a million seller, holding the number one R&B spot for four weeks and the number one pop spot for two weeks on Billboard's charts. The When a Man Loves a Woman LP peaked at number 37 pop in summer 1966. The single was used in a 1987 Levi jeans ad, reissued in England, and became a number two U.K. hit that same year. A standard, "When a Man Loves a Woman" has been covered by countless artists (Shirley Scott, Barbara Mandrell, Wes Montgomery, Yusef Lateef) hitting number one pop again, this time for Michael Bolton in fall 1991.

Ivy started his own labels, Quinvy and South Camp, distributed by Atco/Atlantic. Some of the releases are favorites among Northern soul devotees: Tony Varner's "Tearstained Face"; Bill Brandon's "Self-Preservation," "One Minute Woman," and "Rainbow Road"; and Tony Borders' "Cheaters Never Win" and "What Kind of Spell."

In the '70s, Ivy sold his studio, earned an M.A. degree from Mississippi State University, and began teaching accounting courses. ~ Ed Hogan, Rovi

Old Capitol Studios is at 2614 University Blvd in downtown Tuscaloosa. The studio got it's name due to the fact that we are located a stones throw away from the remains of Alabama's first state capitol. The studio is in a home that was built in the 1940s and has a warmth and a cozy atmosphere condusive for making music and art.

The plaster walls and hardwood floors give the studio an acoustic resonance that creates a very "roomy" sound. We feel that the sound of the room along with the sound of the instrument creates a very "live" sounding recording. We blend the use of vintage recording techniques and gear with todays modern recording software and tools. We have recorded the Dexateens, Dan Sartain, Jeffery Evans, Taylor Hollingsworth. We support the Alabama Crimson Tide.
